The SL class was a type of car introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1952. In the beginning it was primarily used for races, but because of the great interest in a production version, Mercedes-Benz decided to manufacture this car as a road version. The W113 series was produced from 1963 to 1971. In total, approximately 48,912 units were manufactured. The W113 replaced the R121 (W121 BII) in 1963, and it was succeeded by the R107 in 1971. The 230 SL (1963-1967), the 250 SL (1967) and the 280 SL (1968-1971) were available with a manual or an automatic gearbox. Almost all of the models were delivered as standard with a soft top, but a hard top was also available as an option. The hard top had a vaulted shape like a Chinese pagoda roof, which is why the W113 was commonly called the Pagoda. A 2+2 coupé with hard top was also available. Instead of the box for the soft top, a small, collapsible bench was provided.
