What is the minimum age for renting a vehicle?

The minimum age and the driving licence depend on the type of vehicle that you rent.

  • Drivers of cars must be at least 23 years old and in possession of a valid Class B licence for at least 1 year. 
  • Drivers of luxury cars, classic cars and sports cars must be at least 30 years old and in possession of a valid Class B licence for at least 3 years.
  • Drivers of vans and moving vans must be at least 21 years old and in possession of a valid Class B or BE licence (depending on the type of vehicle) for at least 1 year. 
  • Drivers of trucks must be at least 21 years old and in possession of a valid Class C licence for at least 1 year. 
  • Drivers of motorcycles must be at least 25 years old and in possession of a valid Class A licence for at least 3 years.

Please note: drivers younger than 26 years old pay an extra €6.50 (incl. VAT) per driver per day above the daily and weekly prices.

Which type of driving licence must I have?

The legal obligations are applied for renting a vehicle or motorcycle. 

  • Class A licence: motorcycle of more than 50 cc.
  • Class B licence:
    • vehicle for passenger transport (max. 8 passengers and 1 driver);
    • vehicle for transporting goods, the weight of which (vehicle + load) does not exceed 3500 kg;
    • trailer up to 750 kg.
  • Class BE licence: allows one to pull a trailer or semitrailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 3500 kg. If the trailer or semitrailer has a MAM of more than 3500 kg and the gross combination weight (GCW) is maximum 12,000 kg then a Class C1+E licence is required. Holders of a Class BE licence attained before 01/05/2013 are permitted to pull a trailer or semitrailer with a MAM of more than 3500 kg on condition that the GCW is maximum 12,000 kg.
  • Class B+96 licence: allows drivers to operate a combination consisting of a category B tractor unit and a trailer with a MAM >750 kg where the GCW is greater than 3500 kg but no more than 4250 kg.
  • Class C licence - with valid driver’s medical certificate: trucks of more than 3500 kg, trailers up to 750 kg.
  • Class CE licence: combination of a category C tractor unit with a trailer of more than 750 kg.
  • Class D licence: passenger transport for more than 8 passengers.
  • Class DE licence: category D tractor unit with a trailer of more than 750 kg, trailer cannot be used for passenger transport.

Are there fees associated with an extra driver?

To add an additional driver to a car, van, moving van, motorcycle, trailer or truck you must pay €19.97 (incl. VAT) extra per driver.
