What insurance is included when renting a vehicle?

Each Dockx rental vehicle includes Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL) in the rental price. The excess varies depending on vehicle type.

We recommend you take out additional excess waiver. This way you pay much less in case of damage and you always know where you stand. Ask for it when picking up your vehicle.

Not covered by TPL insurance:

  • Damage to the vehicle roof and damage caused by cargo
  • Damage due to gross fault or gross negligence (e.g. driving under the influence)
  • Intentional damage
  • Damage to goods you transport

Travelling abroad? Take out additional travel assistance insurance. Without this insurance, no repatriation is provided in case of breakdown or accident. TPL insurance is only valid in countries on the approved list — see the 'Fuel, mileage & abroad' category for the full overview.

How does damage registration work at Dockx Rental?

Damage registration at Dockx Rental is completely digital — no paperwork. At pick-up, a Dockx employee walks around the vehicle with you to identify all existing damage. Photos are taken of each side and each damaged area. You then receive the damage report and photos by email. Transparent and unambiguous.

What should I do in case of breakdown or accident with the rental vehicle?

In case of breakdown or accident, contact Dockx Rental as soon as possible. During opening hours, you can reach us via your Dockx Service Shop (Mon-Sat, 07:30–18:30). Outside opening hours, call 03 828 80 80.

In case of breakdown:

  • Try to identify the cause of the defect.
  • Call us — we will see together what needs to be done.
  • Roadside assistance and towing costs can be charged if the defect is not due to the vehicle itself.

In case of accident:

  • Call us immediately.
  • Fill in the European accident report form correctly. Preferably have a police report made.
  • Provide us with the report number and the interrogation report if established.
  • Note: an incorrect or incomplete accident report form may mean you are fully responsible for the damage.

Who pays parking or traffic fines with a rental vehicle?

As a driver, you pay all traffic and parking fines yourself, both in Belgium and abroad. Dockx Rental immediately forwards any fines received to the customer.

Traffic fines: fall under criminal law and are entirely the responsibility of the driver. Pay on time — the longer you wait, the higher the costs.

Parking fines: fall under municipal law. Pay the amount due within the specified period. If you don't pay on time?

  • Dockx receives a first notice (±€30) and forwards it to you.
  • Then a second notice (±€45) and possibly a third registered notice (±€45 + shipping costs) follow.
  • If non-payment, a bailiff is engaged.

Do you disagree with a parking fine? You can lodge a complaint with the relevant municipality. Inform Dockx Rental — but the costs will be charged anyway, regardless of the status of your complaint.
