How does insurance for the vehicle work?

Civil Liability insurance is included in the rental price. The deductible (franchise) depends on the type of vehicle. We recommend covering this deductible with additional insurance. In the event of damage, you will have to pay much less and you are sure of a low damage cost. A number of vehicles come with a fixed deductible that cannot be covered. When picking up your vehicle, inquire about this in our Dockx Service Shops.

Civil Liability insurance is valid within a limited number of countries. Dockx rental vehicles can be used in the following countries: Andorra, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, North Macedonia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland.

Are you travelling abroad? If so, we recommend taking out additional travel assistance insurance. Without travel assistance insurance there is no repatriation of the vehicle, the driver or other passengers in the event of a breakdown or accident. Dockx Rental only provides repatriation of the vehicle if it must be left behind for repairs in the event of a mechanical problem that falls under the liability of Dockx Rental. In the event of a breakdown or accident, Dockx provides telephone assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

The following damage is not covered by civil liability insurance:

  • damage to the roof of the vehicle and damage caused by the vehicle’s load
  • damage arising from a serious error or gross negligence on the part of the hirer or driver (e.g. driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol)
  • damage caused intentionally (e.g. fraud) by the hirer and/or driver
  • damage to the goods transported

You can take out extra insurance for your cargo or passengers with your insurance broker.

How is damage to the vehicle registered?

No paperwork, no worries… Both the car rental and damage registration are completely digital. Together with a Dockx employee, you walk around the vehicle and identify any damage. The damage registration is completely digital. Photos are taken of every side of the vehicle and any damage. Once the damage has been registered, you will receive an e-mail from us containing a damage report of the vehicle before departure and the photos. It's both transparent and unambiguous

What about parking and traffic fines?

Traffic fines
Traffic fines (police fines) are governed by criminal law. If you break a traffic law, then you, as the driver, will also be fully responsible for the fine. As the driver, you will be required to pay this fine yourself.

If you break a traffic law in a foreign country then you, as the driver, will be required to pay this yourself. We advise you to pay the fine within the specified period. The longer you wait, the higher the costs become. In the end, a bailiff will be called in.

Parking fines
Parking fines (retributions) are governed by local legislation. As the driver, you will be required to pay this fine yourself. We advise you to pay the fine on time in order to avoid additional costs.

Procedure for parking fines:

  • Did you find a parking ticket on the front windscreen of your vehicle? Then please pay the amount owed by the deadline indicated. All information concerning the payment can be found on the ticket.
  • What happens if you do not pay this fine on time? Dockx will receive the first reminder (± €30). This will be transferred and charged to you, as the customer. If you fail to pay this on time, it will be followed by a second reminder (± €45) and possibly a third reminder (± €45 + costs of registered mail). If the third reminder is not paid on time, a bailiff will be called in. The costs will then become very high.

You disagree with the parking fine? In that case, you can submit a notice of objection to the relevant municipality. Consult the ‘retribution rules’ of the municipality where your parking ticket was issued. Please keep us informed in this case. Dockx immediately passes the amount to be paid to the client, regardless of the status of the dispute application.
